Once upon a time, there was a little girl, who lived at home with her soul mother, a dog.
She passed the days playing in the woods, talking to the tree fairies, and learning the ways of the wolf from her dog mother.
The little girl knew much magic in her life. Not magic about changing the world or casting spells. The magic that her dog mother taught her was about Understanding and Loving, and she taught it well and often.
But the time comes for all of us when we think we are being cheated out of something more, and that time came for this girl too.
And when a woman came to the door, promising magic and spells and excitement, the girl eagerly followed her away. The dog mother howled and cried for the girl to return, but the tempted little girl paid her no heed. She followed the woman to her castle without a word.
But when they reached the castle, the woman cast a spell on her. Not a spell with magic of the universe, but a spell of words. She kept the girl there, and the girl sat by her knees day and night, pining away under the woman’s gaze.
Sometimes, the woman would let the dog mother speak to the girl, but the girl only stared at the dog mother as though she were deaf; she no longer understood the canine tongue!

A year went by, and the girl grew sickly and pale, and her heart began to die. She saw no light but the woman’s face, and it brought her no happiness.
On day, the woman’s wordspell faltered and did not make sense, and the spell was weakened enough to let the girl think, only for a moment. She looked around the room and saw a window. She ran to it and let the sun bathe her in warmth – the woman had given her no warmth. The girl turned to face the woman, seeing her a last for what she was.
The woman stood, at once confident and fearful. She opened her mouth to begin another spell, but the girl opened her mouth too.
She took a deep breath… and howled. She howled for all she was worth, drowning out the sound of the woman’s story. She howled and howled, and she ran past the woman and down the stairs. When she reached the bottom, she opened the door and kept running.
When she reached her house, she ran to embrace her dog mother. But alas, while they loved each other dearly, the girl was never able to hear her mother again.
Long after her dog mother died, the girl began to learn the language again.
Slowly, she remembered the true tongue, and the way of the wolf – her way.
But even as she learned and relearned, she could never escape. For though she had run from the woman, she still heard her words in her head sometimes. She still felt the effects of the woman’s spells sometimes, and it was then that she would run and howl and scream to escape the noise.
